What platform for ? Android or iOS.
What app are you making and have you got a creative brainstorm or mind map of balancing out all the pro's and con's,
realistic goals and what not ?
Do you know any program languages and have you read up on how to properly configure a mobile or tablet app ?
I'm sorry to say but building an app is like building a computer game or piece of software.
There is a lot of coding involved (sometimes basic and easy, other times pretty complex) you should also read a handy guide on Apples and Androids webpage that
will explain what you need to when it comes to making the app but as far as program doing it for you, I'm afraid there isn't.
You could still start by learning C++ and Java and maybe in a year or two come you will be fluent in the languages and be able to develop your app.

That's cool, programming and coding is a very interesting subject to get into.
It can be very tedious at times but as long as you have a interest and don't mind perseverance until you get a basic understanding
of what you are doing then it can be fun to learn.
I wish I had programming classes when I was back in school but coarse's in computing where not as great as they are now.
When I had technologic studies that kind of brushed up on programming but not so much.
I had to basically learn on my own behalf for years and it was hard as the learning resources where not as diverse as they are now a days.
Another good site I advice checking out that is simple and easy for beginners and those with no knowledge in programming is code academy.
It will really help you out, I will post the link below.

Funny...the teacher gave me that exact same site. Also, I tried a Mario clone tutorial. I have the basics, but now I need the goombas to have gravity, not have a fatal error when I'm hit, and who knows what else.

That just goes to show you how great of a resource it is.
The older mario games (and NES games in general) where all writing in C+ so if you learn C++ then you will easily be able to produce platform titles or homebrews
such as the likeness of the old mario titles.
The game used sprites so the animation was essentially just the sprite being draw in different style, there was no complexity with the animation involved (well to today's standards anyway, back then it was a pretty big deal).
You never really had physics present in the game either it was boundary and hit box detection script actions (you will learn more about that as your coarse progresses).
I'm might try to make a Mario clone actually, by the looks of it and my background knowledge I can't see it being overly difficult.
What makes the older 8bit titles even better is the fact I don't even have to use an engine to do it, I could write a Mario type platform in notepad and have it executing
through a basic compiler.
It is good that you are getting to grips with older platform titles as it will make you gain a better understanding and it makes it a little easier, rather than your teacher
making you jump head first into say something like a modern adventure or FPS title.
Another good thing to do is mess about with games files and modify them to see what everything does and make little mods here and there.
That will build up your understanding on how games are produced.
I used to mess around a lot with hex editors and do even basics things such as change costumes or colours of costumes of game characters or enemies and what not.

Today I was able to fix the fatal error, however, the stage still was difficult as FUCK.
