It's not a spider. It's in the arachnid family to an extent, but it ain't no spider.

It does have the most deadly venom out of any animal in the world though, more deadly than any snake, spider, scorpion or anything. It just hasn't got the evolutionary tools it needs to use the venom Razz

I can find some other source if Wikipedia is not reliable enough.

Anyway, my friend is scared of spiders but not the longlegs so I always tend to point this out for him.

Well the fact that they can fly makes them non-spider. I've done the museum studies and a daddy-long legs is not a spider. It can fly, but is an arachnid, however NOT of the spider family.

Unless you are thinking of the actual spider that has the nickname "daddy-long legs" just because it has long legs?

Ummm.... what crawler are we talking about? They most certainly cannot fly, and have 8 legs like all the other spiders. They don't even have wings.

Oooh... Now I know what you're talking about Very Happy I meant these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pholcus_phalangioides and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opiliones

What you were talking about was this, I assume? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crane_fly

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

No problem. I didn't even know there were more creatures called that other than those spiders until now. Say, what's the fourth one?

Haha. I was so confused. I was thinking about the same thing that Mass was thinking about. Though you both seems to be misinformed. The "spider" daddy long legs are not arachnids and neither are those fly things. Also, I had heard once that the "spider" daddy long legs are the most venomous ever. But Fergus seems to say that the fly kind are. I think I read that the "spider" kind was just a rumor and that they were not venomous. In all honesty I doubt the fly ones are too because if they were, you could squish them and get them into your blood stream and die. Can you link me to a reliable source that states that those fly things are venomous?

I know the flying ones aren't but the spidery ones aren't either? Why are they called arachnids and spiders in every source I can find?

Oh, I remember the venom of daddy longlegs being tested in the Mythbusters Very Happy That proved to be just a myth.

News on the daddy-long legs front:

The whole venom thing is an old-wives tale.

Neither the spider nor the crane fly have any venom glands, therefore don't even have the venom that could be classed as the "most potent."

Thank god Razz

Even if it did, it still couldn't harm you. Its fangs aren't strong enough to pierce the flesh of humans, dogs, cats, etc..

Yeah I know, I mentioned that already a couple of posts back. Not only are they not strong enough, they are too small to pierce the flesh.

The spider variant is able to pierce flesh with its fangs. This also was proven in Mythbusters.
